Applying for a passport in India is a straightforward process, provided you have all the necessary documents ready. Your passport is an essential document, serving as proof of identity and facilitating international travel. Lets detail the documents required for passport applications in India..

Documents for a Fresh Adult Passport

Start with the official Passport Seva Document Advisor and select your circumstances. This checklist concerns applications in India; Indian Missions abroad can have different submission requirements.

  • Present-address proof: use an accepted document matching the address declared in the application. Check the adviser rather than assuming every utility bill or rental document qualifies.
  • Date-of-birth proof: applicants born before 1 October 2023 can use a document from Passport Seva’s accepted list, such as a birth certificate, recognised school/matriculation certificate, or PAN card showing the precise date of birth. Aadhaar is not listed as a DOB document on the current official DOB list.
  • Born on or after 1 October 2023: the official list requires a birth certificate from the Registrar of Births and Deaths, municipal corporation or another authority empowered under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act.
  • Non-ECR or special circumstances: provide the proof the adviser requests. A highest-qualification certificate is not a universal requirement for every applicant.
  • Government/PSU/statutory-body employees: the additional choices are Identity Certificate Annexure A, NOC Annexure G, or Prior Intimation Annexure H, as applicable. Annexure M is not the NOC specified in the current FAQ.

Documents Required for a Passport Appointment

Carry the originals required for your case and self-attested copies. Follow your appointment confirmation for the application reference and entry requirements. Do not treat a printed payment receipt or extra photographs as universally mandatory.

Passport Seva’s application guidance specifically asks applicants below four years of age to carry a recent 4.5 × 3.5 cm photograph with a white background. Follow the current instructions for your applicant and submission location rather than assuming all adults must bring two printed photographs.

Documents for a Tatkaal Passport

Tatkaal is not available for every category. In addition to the normal documents and applicable address, DOB and non-ECR proof, the official Tatkaal list requires applicants over 18 to select three accepted documents, and applicants below 18 to select two from items 1–6. Use the current official list and exclusions to choose the documents appropriate to your case.

The current page also requires an Undertaking for Tatkaal Scheme; use the form linked on that official page. Do not use the old blanket instruction to obtain a Verification Certificate under Annexure F and a standard affidavit under Annexure I. In the current annexure list, F concerns lost/damaged passports and I is a declaration about a minor’s particulars. Nor should travel tickets be presented as a universal proof-of-urgency requirement.

Documents for Diplomatic/Official Passports

These are a separate service, not the ordinary personal-passport checklist. Use the official diplomatic/official-passport application instructions and the authorisations applicable to the government duty. Do not substitute ordinary-passport annexures or assume this article establishes eligibility.

Documents for Re-Issue or Renewal

For an expired or expiring ordinary passport, choose the appropriate re-issue reason. Keep the old passport and the copies requested by the Document Advisor ready. Additional evidence depends on whether the address, name, date of birth, appearance or other particulars are changing, or whether the passport is lost or damaged.

Do not automatically submit the entire fresh-passport list again. Likewise, a marriage certificate alone is not a universal answer to every kind of name change. Select the precise change in the adviser and use the corresponding documents.

Documents for a Minor’s Fresh Passport or Re-Issue

Check the minor’s DOB evidence, address evidence and parent/guardian requirements for the particular case. For births on or after 1 October 2023, use the required birth certificate. For a re-issue, include the old passport and the copies requested by the adviser.

Annexure D applies to ordinary parent/guardian-consent cases. It is not safe to say both parents’ consent or passports are mandatory without exception: single-parent, custody, adoption, deceased-parent and guardian cases have specific requirements. Annexure C and court documents may apply in particular circumstances. Use Passport Seva’s special-cases guidance rather than assuming Annexure H is a minor-consent form.

Important Tips for a Smooth Passport Application

  1. Check Expiry Date: Start renewal well before expiry to avoid delays.
  2. Keep Originals Ready: Carry originals for verification along with photocopies.
  3. Adhere to Photo Specifications: Ensure photos meet size and background requirements.
  4. Update Personal Information: Verify all details are current and accurate.
  5. Opt for Online Applications: The online process is quicker and more efficient.
  6. Check Tatkaal Eligibility: If you need urgent processing, check the exclusions, extra fees and documents before selecting Tatkaal.
  7. Understand Passport Types: Choose the correct type based on your needs.
  8. Safe Handling: Store your passport securely to avoid damage or loss.

Conclusion

Having the right documents is crucial for a hassle-free passport application process, whether for a new passport, renewal, or Tatkaal service. Use this guide as a starting point and confirm the checklist for your own circumstances. For the most accurate and updated information, refer to the Passport Seva website.

FAQs on Documents Required for Passport Applications

Is Aadhaar enough for every document requirement?

No. Address proof and date-of-birth proof are separate checks. The current Passport Seva DOB list does not include Aadhaar.

Are Annexures F and I compulsory for Tatkaal?

Not as a universal checklist. Use the current Tatkaal list, eligibility exclusions and any case-specific declaration. The current annexure titles differ from the older instructions.

Do I need new documents for a re-issue?

It depends on the reason and changes requested. Use the Document Advisor for that exact case and carry the old passport where available.

Is Tatkaal delivery guaranteed within a fixed number of days?

No fixed delivery promise should be made here. Eligibility, document verification, the issuing authority’s checks and dispatch affect the case. Check official status rather than booking non-refundable travel on an assumed delivery date.
