You have decided to invest, and someone sends you a QR code to make the payment. The company name looks familiar, the message sounds professional, and there is even a SEBI registration number attached. Everything seems ready, except for one small question: does the money actually go to the company you think you are paying? That is a question worth answering before your thumb reaches the payment button.

SEBI Check helps you verify the payment details of SEBI-registered intermediaries before transferring money. You can check a UPI ID, use an image containing a QR code, or verify a bank account using its account number and IFSC. However, a verified payment destination does not guarantee investment returns or confirm that the offer itself is suitable for you. Here is how to use SEBI Check and understand what its results mean.

What Is SEBI Check, and What Does It Verify?

SEBI Check is a payment-verification tool for investors dealing with SEBI-registered securities-market intermediaries. These can include stockbrokers, mutual funds and other eligible investment service providers. It lets you independently check the recipient’s payment details instead of relying entirely on a message, brochure or screenshot. The tool is available through the official SEBI Check portal and SEBI’s Saarthi app.

The check concerns the destination of your money, rather than whether a payment has already succeeded. It does not tell you whether mutual fund units have been allotted or whether your broker has updated your trading balance. It is also not a universal verification service for every bank deposit, insurance policy or investment advertised online. Its purpose is to help you establish whether the payment details match verified records within its framework.

What Should You Keep Ready Before Using SEBI Check?

Start with the exact payment details provided through the intermediary’s official website, app or customer-service channel. Depending on the payment method, you will need the full UPI ID, an image containing the QR code, or the recipient’s account number and IFSC. Keep the intermediary’s name and registration details available so that you can compare them with the result. A payment check is much more useful when you already know whom you are supposed to be paying.

Be particularly careful if someone sends “updated bank details” through WhatsApp or email. Confirm the change independently using contact information obtained from the company’s official website. Calling the number included in the same suspicious message does not give you an independent confirmation. It simply takes you back to whoever sent the message in the first place.

How Do You Verify a UPI ID Using SEBI Check?

Open the official portal and select your preferred language. Under the verified UPI section, choose TYPE. Enter the recipient’s complete UPI ID, including everything after the @ symbol. Select Check UPI ID and review the result.

Compare the returned identity details with the intermediary you intended to pay. The official UPI verification interface provides fields for the intermediary’s name, legal account holder and registration number. A familiar abbreviation alone is not enough to resolve an unexplained difference. If the identity does not make sense, contact the intermediary through its official channel before proceeding.

How Do You Check an Investment QR Code?

On the portal, select USING PHOTO under the UPI verification section. Choose Upload Image for a saved image or Use Camera to capture one. The current interface accepts an image containing a UPI QR code and/or a typed UPI ID. Follow the prompts and review the verification result.

A logo printed beside a QR code does not establish where the code sends money. Someone can copy a company’s branding while changing the payment destination underneath it. Check the actual identifier and recipient details rather than the appearance of the image. The same habit is useful for everyday payments, as discussed in our guide to avoiding UPI scams.

How Do You Verify a Bank Account Before an Investment Transfer?

Select the account-verification option labelled FOR SAFER NEFT/RTGS TRANSFERS. Enter the recipient’s IFSC code and account number, then select Check Account Details. These should be the intermediary’s receiving-account details, rather than your own bank details. Review the result before adding or paying the beneficiary.

The official account-verification interface distinguishes verified details from details that do not match its verified records. Compare the name and legal account holder shown with the entity you intended to pay. If a brand name and legal name differ, obtain an explanation through the intermediary’s official channel. An unexplained name difference deserves attention even when the account number has been entered correctly.

What Should You Do With the Verification Result?

A successful result should be read alongside the recipient details it displays. Check that it relates to the exact UPI ID or account you entered and the intermediary you intended to pay. Verification of one account does not automatically cover another account supplied later. Similarly, a screenshot sent by a salesperson cannot replace a check you perform yourself.

What You SeeWhat You Should Do
The details are verified and match the intended intermediaryConfirm the payment purpose and compare the destination again in your payment app or banking screen.
The details are verified, but the identity is unexpectedPause and obtain an explanation through the intermediary’s official contact channel.
The tool returns “No Match Found”Recheck the details and seek independently confirmed payment instructions before transferring money.
The tool fails to load or does not complete the checkTry again later; an incomplete check is not a successful verification.

For example, suppose you are adding ₹20,000 to your trading account and receive a QR code through a message. You check it, but the returned identity does not match your broker. Even if someone says it belongs to an “authorised collection partner”, you should confirm that explanation directly with the broker. The amount can wait while you establish where it is going.

What Does “No Match Found” Mean on SEBI Check?

A “No Match Found” result means the submitted details did not match verified records in that interface. It does not, by itself, explain the reason or establish that every unmatched account is fraudulent. A typing error, incorrect payment instructions or a payment outside the tool’s scope may require further investigation. For the proposed securities-market payment, however, you have not obtained the verification you were looking for.

First, compare the entered details with the original instructions character by character. If they are correct, ask the intermediary for its current official collection details and explain the result you received. Avoid sending a small “test payment” while the mismatch remains unresolved. A successful transfer of ₹1 only proves that the account can receive money, not that it is the right account.

What Do SEBI’s Validated UPI IDs Look Like?

Validated UPI IDs use a structured format that includes the intermediary’s identifier, its category and a bank-specific handle beginning with @valid. Category markers include .brk for brokers and .mf for mutual funds. The bank name follows the @valid portion, so the full address does not simply end at “@valid”. This structure forms part of the validated UPI framework.

The framework also includes a thumbs-up symbol inside a green triangle for validated UPI payments. Look for the confirmation in the actual payment process rather than trusting a symbol pasted into a promotional image. Use SEBI Check to verify the full address instead of judging it only by its spelling. Familiar-looking text and branding are useful clues, but they should not carry the entire decision.

Does a Verified Result Mean the Investment Is Safe?

A verified recipient does not remove market risk or establish that every claim made by a salesperson is accurate. It does not approve promised returns, judge your investment goals or authenticate every person using the company’s name. You still need to understand the product, charges, withdrawal conditions and the reason for the payment. A payment to an investment adviser, for example, needs a clear explanation of what service you are purchasing.

Separately verify the entity through SEBI’s intermediary directory, and use its authentic website or app. If someone claims to represent that entity, confirm their identity through the entity itself. Pressure to pay immediately or promises of unusually high guaranteed returns deserve further scrutiny even when some details appear legitimate. Our guide to detecting investment scams covers these broader warning signs.

What If You Have Already Made the Payment?

You can check the destination details after paying, but SEBI Check is not a transaction-tracking or refund tool. If the recipient verifies but your investment balance has not updated, contact the intermediary with the amount, date and transaction reference. Check the payment status with your bank or UPI provider as well. Keep the payment receipt and any acknowledgement from the intermediary together.

If you suspect that you paid a fraudster, contact your bank immediately and call 1930, the financial cyber-fraud helpline. Report the incident through the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal and retain the complaint acknowledgement. Save the QR image, chats, payment details and transaction reference rather than deleting them in frustration. Prompt reporting can help authorities act, although it does not guarantee recovery.

What Are the Frequently Asked Questions About SEBI Check?

Do I Need to Change My Own UPI ID to Use SEBI Check?

No, the validated UPI framework concerns the intermediary’s receiving UPI ID. You can continue using your existing personal UPI ID to make payments. What matters is checking the destination supplied by the intermediary. You do not need to create an investor UPI ID containing @valid.

Can SEBI Check Verify Accounts Used for NEFT, RTGS or IMPS?

Yes, the tool can verify an intermediary’s bank-account details using the account number and IFSC. This makes it useful even when you intend to transfer money without UPI. Enter the specific receiving account provided for your payment. Verification does not initiate the transfer or confirm that funds have arrived.

Is SEBI Check the Same as Checking SEBI Registration?

No, the two checks answer related but different questions. A registration search helps establish the identity and registration details of an intermediary. SEBI Check helps verify the payment destination supplied to you. Using both helps identify situations where someone quotes a genuine company’s registration details but supplies unrelated payment instructions.

Must Every Investment Payment Be Made Through UPI?

No, validated UPI IDs do not make UPI compulsory for every investment payment. Other permitted payment methods remain available under the framework. If you choose UPI for a covered payment to an intermediary, use its current validated receiving ID. If you choose a bank transfer, verify the relevant account details instead.

Can SEBI Check Cancel a Payment or Recover My Money?

No, SEBI Check verifies payment details and does not reverse transactions. For a payment problem, contact your bank or payment provider and the intended intermediary. For suspected fraud, report it promptly through the bank and official cybercrime channels. Keep the transaction reference and supporting evidence ready so that your complaint can be traced.
