You redeem your mutual fund investment, see a reassuring confirmation on the app and start checking your bank account. The money is not there. You refresh the statement, check your messages and return to the investment app, which still looks perfectly pleased with itself. Meanwhile, you would quite like to know where your money has gone.

If your mutual fund redemption amount is not credited, first check whether the transaction is still being processed or the payment has actually failed. These are different problems, and waiting longer will not necessarily fix the second one. You also need to confirm which bank account was registered for the payout. Here is how to trace the transaction without spending your week being passed between an app, a fund house and a bank.

How Long Should a Mutual Fund Redemption Take?

SEBI’s general timeline requires redemption proceeds to be transferred within three working days from the date of redemption. For schemes investing at least 80% of their assets in permissible overseas investments, the timeline is five working days. Specified exceptional circumstances can allow additional time, so check the scheme’s applicable terms and any explanation provided for a delay. These requirements appear in SEBI’s March 2026 Master Circular for Mutual Funds.

The date you tap “Redeem” is not always the date on which a valid request is accepted for processing. Submission after the applicable cut-off, a non-business day or an incomplete authorisation can affect the transaction. Check the acceptance date and expected payout date in the acknowledgement rather than counting calendar days from your first click. A weekend may feel quite long when you are waiting for money, but it does not automatically mean the payout is overdue.

Check the expected date for your particular transaction before assuming the payment has failed. If that date passes, ask the provider to explain the delay and confirm whether the payout has been initiated. Where it cites an exceptional circumstance, request the applicable reason and revised payment date in writing. “Please wait” is considerably more useful when it comes with an explanation and a deadline.

Is Your Redemption Still Processing, Rejected or Already Paid?

Open the order details and compare them with the AMC’s transaction statement or confirmation email. An asset management company, or AMC, is the fund house that manages your scheme. A successful order submission does not by itself establish that the bank has received the money. Look for separate confirmation of redemption processing and payout.

Redemption processedWhether the payout has been initiatedRequest the payment date and reference

A redemption rejection can arise before there is any money to transfer. For instance, units may still be locked in and unavailable for redemption. Our guide to Equity-Linked Savings Schemes explains why each ELSS SIP instalment has its own three-year lock-in. That situation needs a different response from a completed redemption whose bank payment has bounced.

Which Bank Account Should Receive Your Redemption Money?

For mutual funds held in statement-of-account, or SOA, form, check the bank account registered against the relevant folio. A folio is your account record with the mutual fund. Where multiple accounts are registered, check which one was selected for the redemption and which is marked as the default.

For units held in demat form, ask your broker or depository participant to confirm the bank mandate attached to the holding. Do not assume that changing a bank account in one section of an investment app updates every investment record. Instead, ask the provider to identify the destination account used for this specific payout. Compare its last four digits and IFSC with your bank records before you start searching statements.

The account used for your latest SIP deduction is not sufficient evidence of where the redemption should arrive. Similarly, submitting a bank-change request does not prove that the new details were approved before the payout was processed. If you recently changed banks, request confirmation of the account details used and the date the change became effective. This can quickly establish whether you are checking the wrong account or dealing with a failed transfer.

What Happens If the Registered Bank Account Is Closed or Incorrect?

A closed account or outdated bank details can prevent the payment from reaching you. The next step is to obtain the actual rejection reason rather than simply requesting another transfer to the same details. Ask whether the money has returned to the sender and who is responsible for reprocessing it.

For SOA holdings, contact the AMC or its registrar and transfer agent, usually called an RTA, about updating the folio’s bank details. An available service route may also include MFCentral, which supports bank-change requests for eligible holdings. For demat holdings, follow the bank-update process specified by your broker or depository participant.

Keep these documents ready, subject to the provider’s requirements:

  • A cancelled cheque with your name printed on it, or another accepted proof of the new account.
  • A recent bank statement or passbook showing the account holder’s name, account number and IFSC.
  • Proof of the previously registered account, where required.
  • A bank-issued closure confirmation if the old account has been closed and the provider requests it.
  • The prescribed bank-change and unpaid-redemption request forms.

Ask for the exact document checklist before submitting the request, particularly if the old account is no longer accessible. Proof of both the old and new accounts may be required, as discussed in Mint’s response to a redemption and bank-change query. Obtain confirmation that the change has been approved, then ask for the outstanding payment to be reissued or reprocessed. Updating bank details and recovering an earlier failed payout may require separate actions.

How Can You Trace a Redemption Marked as Paid?

Ask the AMC, RTA or platform for the payment details needed to trace the credit. A statement that the transaction is “completed” is not enough if nobody can identify where the payment went. Request the net payout amount, payment date, destination account details, payment mode and UTR or equivalent bank reference. Also ask whether the transfer is shown as successful, pending or returned.

For an electronic payment, give that reference to your receiving bank and request a trace. Ask the bank to confirm whether it received the transfer, rejected it or returned it to the sender. If the bank confirms a return, share that response with the provider responsible for reprocessing the payout. Keep the bank’s complaint or service-request number with your mutual fund records.

Check the bank statement itself rather than relying only on an SMS or notification. Search by the amount and date range, because the narration may contain an AMC, registrar or payment-processing name you do not immediately recognise. If the provider says it issued a cheque or warrant instead, request its number, dispatch details and delivery status. If it is missing, expired or carries unusable bank details, ask for the applicable cancellation and reissue process.

Whom Should You Contact When the Redemption Amount Is Not Credited?

Start with the provider through which you placed the request, but ask it to identify who currently needs to act. Your investment app may display the transaction while the AMC, RTA or a clearing corporation handles another part of the payout. The receiving bank becomes useful once there is a payment reference to investigate. Knowing that handover point makes your follow-up much more specific.

ProblemAppropriate Starting Point
Order not accepted or authorisation incompleteInvestment platform or AMC through which you submitted it
Folio bank details need correctionAMC or its RTA
Demat-linked bank details need correctionBroker or depository participant
Electronic payout marked successful but missingReceiving bank, using the payment reference
Payment returned and awaiting reissueProvider identified as responsible for the failed payout
Unresolved service complaintProvider’s grievance officer, followed by SCORES where applicable

If support directs you elsewhere, ask for a written explanation of the payment’s current status and the next organisation’s role. Include that response when you contact the next provider so you do not have to rebuild the story from scratch. Ask whether any further document or instruction is needed from you to release the money. The useful question is “What action will get this payment completed?”, rather than simply “Where is my money?”

How Do You Escalate an Unresolved Redemption Payment?

Send a written complaint containing the scheme name, folio or relevant account reference, redemption date, amount and transaction number. Attach the acknowledgement, payment-status evidence, relevant bank statement and earlier support responses. State the remedy clearly: trace the payment, explain the rejection, or reprocess it to the verified registered account. Ask for a complaint number and a definite next action rather than another general reassurance.

If the concerned securities-market provider does not resolve the complaint satisfactorily, escalate through SEBI SCORES after first approaching that entity. Under the current SCORES process, the entity must submit its Action Taken Report within 21 calendar days of receiving the complaint on SCORES. You can seek review within 15 calendar days of the report if the response does not resolve the issue. These are complaint-handling timelines, not a promise that every disputed payment will reach your bank within 21 days.

For an AMC delay beyond the applicable redemption-payment deadline, ask whether delayed-payment interest is payable. SEBI specifies interest at 15% per annum for delays covered by its rules, borne by the AMC. A closed account or defective bank mandate should not be treated as automatic proof of AMC liability, so request the reason and calculation in writing. The applicable provisions are in SEBI’s mutual fund master circular.

What Are the Frequently Asked Questions About Missing Mutual Fund Redemption Payments?

Why Is My Redemption Successful but the Money Is Not in My Bank?

The status may confirm that your units were redeemed without confirming final bank credit. Check the payout date, destination account and payment reference separately. If the transfer was returned, request the rejection reason and reprocessing instructions. If it was reported as successful, ask your bank to trace it using the reference.

Will Changing My SIP Bank Account Fix a Failed Redemption?

Not necessarily, because the SIP debit mandate and redemption bank record serve different purposes. Verify the payout account attached to the relevant folio or demat holding. Then confirm that any required bank change has been approved. Separately ask whether the failed payment will be retried automatically or needs a reissue request.

Should I Redeem Again If the First Payment Has Not Arrived?

Do not place another redemption merely to recover an earlier unpaid amount. First establish whether the original units were already redeemed. A fresh request could sell more of your remaining investment without resolving the missing payment. If the original order was rejected before execution, address that rejection reason before deciding whether to submit again.

Is My Money Lost If the Redemption Went to a Closed Account?

A rejected payment to a closed account does not by itself mean your money is lost. Ask the provider to confirm the payment’s return and identify where the amount is now held. Complete the bank-verification requirements and request release to the approved account. If it has been recorded as unclaimed, follow the AMC’s unclaimed-redemption process.

How Long Does a Failed Redemption Payout Take to Be Reissued?

There is no single reliable timeline for every failed-payment case. The process can depend on the return of the original transfer, bank-detail verification and whether another intermediary must hand the amount back to the AMC. Ask for the expected payment date after your documents have been accepted. If that date passes, follow up against the existing complaint number with the approval and payment history attached.
